The Foreign Trade Manager of the Chilean Meat Exporters’ Association (ExpoCarnes), Rodrigo Castañón, visited Russia and China to strengthen and expand the use of digital certification in transactions with Chile.

In 2010, ExpoCarnes and Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero, SAG) launched a pilot program to partially digitalize the certification of Chilean meat for export, making Chile a global leader in e-certification among export countries.

Chile was the fourth country in the world to establish this digital relationship with China (2013) and the second — the first in the Americas — to establish it with Russia (2016).

E-certification undoubtedly offers a number of benefits. Chief among them are time efficiency and security, according to Rodrigo Castañón. “What we are seeking with the expansion of e-certification is firstly to improve the quality of our export processes and streamline cargo processes in the export market by making the flow paperless. Secondly, we want to make strides forward with security issues. Given the widespread falsification of official documents in Russia and China, e-certification is better for everyone,” explained Castañón.

In addition to moving toward increasingly digital relationships with Russia and China, we also aim to broaden the scope of current agreements. “We want to negotiate expansion of this tool to include additional items in both countries. In Russia, we hope to include poultry,” he said.
SAG and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture. Service (Sernapesca) also form part of the committee that visited the two countries. The expansion and strengthening of digital certifications in new and existing markets is also part of the Agriculture Ministry’s strategic objectives.
